May 30,2009

We have been in Alaska for almost 4 weeks now. The weather has been great with lots of sunshine and only a few rainy days. Everyone here says this has been the best start to summer that they have had in a few years. I am glad we picked a good weather year to be up here. The temps. are mostly in the 50's to upper 60's. I really like the long daylight hours. It does not appear to be affecting my sleep.
Chris had been here for a week now. We picked him up at the airport last Friday and delivered him to his employment in Moose Pass. It appears he will have a great summer and will learn some new skills in the kitchen. I have posted some pictures of Kenya. She is enjoying it up here and really likes to come along on the hikes. I have also posted a picture of Mt. Marathon in Seward. There is a running race each year on 4th of July where they run the 3 miles up the Mountain and then turn around and run 3 miles down. I guess it is quite the event. Also posted are some pictures of the bore tide in Turnagain Arm which is right by our place. You have to look closly as it is bit hard to see. We hope to get a closer viewing point at some future date. Also posted is a picture of Exit Glacier near Seward and a picture of the Tram on one of the Mountains at Alyeska Resort

Well, we are finally in our cabin for the summer. We moved in yesterday and we are we went to a community garage sale in Girdwood today to add to some of the supplies in the cabin. We are posting from the Aleyeska Resort in Girdwood. It is a very nice ski resort. Check it out at www.alyeskaresort.com

I have posted a few pictres so that everyone knows we are not living in a cave for the summer. Actually it is a very nice cabin that was built in 2000. It overlooks the Turnagain Arm and is surrounded by mountains.

If anyone wants to contact us this summer feel free to mail to us at:
Jeff & Patty Thielen
Chugach State Park
HC 52 Box 8999
Indian AK 99540

Or call us at the cabin at 907-653-7711

We will continue to try and post throughout the summer. Life is good and the scenery is fantastic.

Alaska 2009

Greetings from Alaska

Patty and I have now successfully driven the Alaskan Highway. It is a long way to get to the start at Dawson Creek and a long way from Dawson Creek to Alaska. We spent a total of 5 days driving with a stop the first night in Billings Montana to visit my sister and her family.

We drove north from Billings through 18" of snow in Great Falls Montana and crossed into Canada on I 15.

The next four days were just long driving days, but we were able to see some really beautiful country. Going through Alberta, British Columbia, and the Yukon Territory provided us with some fantastic scenery. We also saw plenty of wildlife including, coyotes, Woodland Carribou, Moose, Elk, Buffalo, fox, etc, etc.

We will be moving into our house for the summer tomorrow. There was a little mixup with the current occupant and she will not be able to be out until tomorrow. It is really in a beautiful spot and surrounded by mountains with the Turnagain Arm out in front. The current occupant said she has watched Beluga whales from the Deck of the house. I will post a picture.

There are plenty of hiking trails and a bike trail right out our door for Patty to run on and for me to bike on.

We visited Anchorage today and discovered they have all the same stores we have in Minnesota. Imagine that!!

We are set for a great summer and will try to post as we have time with updates and pictures.

Take care.
